What is Parkinson’s? The general answer to this question would be a brain disorder that leads to shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with walking, balance, and coordination. Although the disease isn’t fatal, the symptoms of it may increase falls, blood clots, pneumonia that can be life-threatening.
There are five primary motor symptoms (Involving movement) for Parkinson's, tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia (slow movement), postural instability (balance problems), and walking/ gait problems.
Symptoms
Tremor: Involuntary shaking or movement
Rigidity: Tightness or stiffness of the limbs or torso
Bradykinesia: Slow-movement
Postural Instability: the inability to maintain a steady, uptight posture or prevent a fall.
Walking or Gait Difficulties: (Gait: a person’s manner of walking) as the
symptom grows in age steps may become slow and small, a shuffling gait, you might propel forward with rapid short steps, but if you have advanced Parkinson's you may experience episodes of freezing.
What are some non-motor symptoms (does not involve movement) of Parkinson’s?
Symptoms
Sleep problems: The inability to fall asleep (Primarily insomnia)
Depression and anxiety: which can lead to suicidal thoughts (depending on how bad it is.)
Pain: this depends on where and how consistent it may be.
Psychosis: this causes patients to experience hallucinations and/or delusions.
Cognitive changes: Problems with thinking, word-finding, and judgment. Difficulty in multitasking and organizing things.
Of course, there are many more symptoms and people with Parkinson’s have different symptoms, but overall this is truly saddening, that is why we are raising money for Parkinson’s, to help these people live their lives to the fullest and not let their disease define them.
